Nature Trail
During the Liberation fight, EOKA created hideouts in the region of Papoutsa, which often the guerrillas fled to. These have been restored and can be visited. There is access via a trail which begins near the Retirement home of Palaichori, with a distance of 5km. Up to the hideout area there is access by car. Subsequently, the visitor can trek around, just below the mountain top of Papoutsa. The view in all directions is magnificent.
The trail has a length of 6,5 kilometres. The duration of the course is about 2,5 hours and every 800 meters there are route signs. There are also resting kiosk, for a protection from the sun or rain ate 1464 meters and at the end of the trail. Along the length, at about every 500 meters, there are benches for resting and trash bins. Alon the length of the trail there is a wide range of plants, 30 of which are presented on signs with pictures and names. The birds which are found along the route are mainly partridges. The rarer found are song thrust, common blackbird, Eurasian jay and others. During the course of the first kilometres on the opposite mountain slopes, in the east, the villages Farmakas and Gourri are observable, and lower the dam od Palaichori. Further on along the route in far end on the northwest the bay of Morfou, on the northeast the plains of Mesaoria and on the north the mountain range of Pentadahtilos are seen. The start of the trail is located about one kilometre from the village as you enter it, coming from Nicosia.
Because the weather is pleasant throughout the year, the island’s great outdoors are not only simple to reach but also offer a wealth of opportunities to learn about the island’s history, culture, and natural features thanks to the abundance of nature trails and walking paths that are clearly marked.
